About Us

The Quality Promotion & Assurance Unit was established in 2004 after the merger between the University of Durban Westville Quality Management Unit and the University of Natal Quality Promotion Unit. The purpose of this merger was in alignment with the College model adopted by the university, thereby providing a centralized office responsible for providing support to the Schools and act as a resource to the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) on all quality related matters.

As part of quality promotion, the unit is expected to develop a programme of activities to institutionalize a culture of quality within UKZN and the commitment to continuous quality improvement. In terms of the quality assurance the unit ensure that academic standards and quality of provision are satisfactory so that students, regulatory bodies, industry and paying public get value for money or return in investment. Quality Promotion and Assurance department falls under the Division of UKZN Teaching and Learning Office (UTLO).

QPA Core Functions

  • Provides leadership on the development and implementation of quality management systems at all levels

  • Facilitate and prepare the University for external programme accreditation and institutional audits

  • To ensure that the University responds effectively to QA national requirements and international developments

  • Promotes quality through institutional policy development and research

  • School and support sector reviews

  • Graduate Opinion Surveys and Student Evaluations

  • Ensuring compliance with the internal QA processes

  • Capacity development for both support and academic staff

QPA Mission Statement

The mission of QPA is to ensure the promotion and development of a culture of quality in the University of KwaZulu-Natal through a comprehensive quality assurance system, which

  • Improves quality in the core functions of teaching, learning, research and service to the University

  • Prepares the University for external programme accreditation, review and institutional audits and ensures the University responds effectively to national and international requirements

  • Provides leadership on the development and implementation of quality management systems at all levels

  • Provides practical support and advice to the University on all quality related activities

  • Promotes quality through institutional policy development
